United Methodist Women
"News Update"
United Methodist Women began its fall session with a gathering of the Anita Barnes Fellowship on Monday, September 19. Fellowship Chairperson, Sylvia Gordon welcomed all who attended. Our theme for the day “Children and God’s Kingdom” began with a devotional by Mary Catherine Bardsley. She related the story of the writing of the hymn “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” Alison Peebles, our new Representative to the Florida Methodist Children’s Home, shared with us her ministry with the Youth in creating quilts for the residents of the Children’s Home. Each child is given a quilt when entering the Home. She asked our help in providing material, monies, or coupons to fabric stores. Our program was given by Ms. Mercy Nyman, Principal of our Christian School. She shared with us picture book stories of her life and encouraged each of us to record our own stories for our children and grandchildren. She also gave an informative report of the school and its importance to Christian education in our community. We extend our thanks to Mercy for her time in speaking to us. We are blessed to have such a devoted Christian and educator as principal of our school. Our summer was restful but continued to be busy. Sylvia thanked all who helped with the Ministerial Association Luncheon in May as well as the FUMCS Teacher Breakfast in August. An Executive Board recommendation to contribute $750.00 toward the purchase of a new convection oven for the church kitchen was approved. A recommendation to give Alison and the Quilt Ministry $100.00 was made and approved. A telephone prayer chain is being developed by Marie Williams. This will provide information to those in the congregation who do not have access to e-mail. Please contact Marie if you would like to be a part of the chain. Silver Palm UMC will be hosting a one- day women’s retreat on October 29th, from 9:30am- 3:00pm. The cost is $25.00 which includes lunch. A sign-up sheet is located in our church office. Mark your calendars for October 17th. We invite all of you to our Fellowship meeting beginning at 10:00am in the FLC. Our guest speakers will be Bob and Meda Jensen. They will present a program on the “Early Churches in Homestead”. A covered dish luncheon will follow the program. Our Bear Ministry will begin making our popular Dolphin bears. Contact Grace Kelly to put in your order. The cost is $10.00 each. The funds raised will be used to buy supplies for the ministry. All women are invited to become members of United Methodist Women. Please join us at any time to learn more about who we are and what we do to help bring about His kingdom here on earth. Call Maxine Booker (305-247-2577), Membership Chairperson, for further information.
